Don’t judge a book by its’ cover – Eat Healthy Foods – Regina

When you first drive up to Eat Healthy Foods, you see a clean fresh sign, but the rest of the building looks like it needs a new coat of paint.. Have you ever heard the saying “Don’t judge a book by its’ cover”? Words to live by…

We walked in the door, and the first thing we noticed was the fresh and enjoyable aroma of the store.  It overloads your senses and makes you want to explore what they have to offer.  So many home-grown local Saskatchewan products line the shelves, right down to the home-made baking and take-out soups, stews and sauces.  Thinking about making cheese? It is one of the only stores in Canada that sells what you need to get started, and will happily explain the process to you.

The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and the owner spent over 10 minutes answering our questions of interesting and unique places to go to in Regina for a foodie.  The best discovery was Kombucha, which is a probiotic tea in a mason jar made in-store that costs $2 if you return the jar.  What a deal!

Definitely will return to sample more of what they have to offer!

Going for a ride in Fellinger’s Red Meat Wagon – Regina

One thing Regina seems to have more of than Saskatoon are amazing, eclectic, personable delis.  There’s some places you walk into and you feel comfortable and at home right away, with owners and staff who make you feel like family and you can tell they know their stuff.

Fellinger’s Red Meat Wagon is one of those places.

So, what did we try?

Caramelized Onion Cheese – very creamy with a hint of onion, tasted incredible on a fresh olive focaccia bread with a grainy mustard and the salsa salami.

Spicy Salsa Salami – It had just the right amount of spice, lean and tasty.

Butter sauce with onion and real bacon.- Advertised as a side for perogies, but when used to make scrambled eggs for breakfast, tasted incredible.

The only sad part of the experience is that, after over 50 years, the owners are retiring. Hopefully the new owners keep the Fellinger’s experience as unique and enjoyable as we found it.

No Backflips for Flip – Regina

We had read many good things about Flip, and booked a reservation.  However, we did not end up reviewing the food…

When we walked in, we were seated immediately. However, the noise was overwhelming, and the tables lacked any feeling of privacy.   The server took over 10 minutes to even bring us water, and when he did arrive, it felt rushed, impersonal, and no thoughts or recommendations on the menu.

The best thing we can say about the night is it led us next door to Siam…

Thai to Die for in Regina – Siam Restaurant

We walked into a quaint yet comfortable, tastefully decorated Thai restaurant in the heart of Regina.  The delicious smell caught our attention, and convinced us to stay.  The service was quick, friendly and efficient.

As to the food itself…

First, we naturally started with appetizers.  We chose the Beef Jerky and the Golden Purse to start, and I will tell you that you can’t go  wrong with either choice.  The Golden Purse was crisp and delicious, the sauce was spicy yet provided the right zest. The Beef Jerky was a completely unique experience, being sweet, chewy and delicious, with just the right texture.  The portions for both were well worth the price.

Next, we ordered the Num Tok Gai Tod, ordered medium spicy.  This is a deep-fried chicken dish made with pork, red and green onions, and cabbage on the side, and a nice hint of cilantro.  The batter itself was very light so it doesn’t have the deep-friend heavy taste you might expect from the description.  Overall, it had delicious thai flavours that won’t disappoint.

Then, for a vegetable dish, we ordered the tempura spinach.  Unexpected deliciousness!! And who has ever heard of tempura spinach??  So crispy and fresh, with just the right amount of batter that didn’t overwhelm the greens.

Last was the Poo Nim Pad Pong Kha-Ri, a deep-fried soft-shelled crab dish.  When you order a crab dish, you never expect portions the size we received!!  Creamy curry, red and green peppers, onions, and a nice hint of lemongrass,   This was our favorite dish of the night!!  One of the best dishes we’ve ever had, and highly recommended!
